Biography

Joris Geldhof is Catherine F. Huisking Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. Before joining the Faculty at Notre Dame, he was a professor of liturgical studies and sacramental theology at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, where he studied philosophy and theology, ultimately earning a PhD/S.T.D. in systematic theology. Specializing in liturgical theology, he has authored Liturgy and Secularism: Beyond the Divide (Liturgical Press, 2018), Liturgical Theology as a Research Program (Brill, 2020), and Monotheism in Christian Liturgy (Cambridge University Press, 2023), and edited and co-edited several other volumes in various languages. Most recent among them are The Worshiping Body: Chenu, Liturgy and Sacraments (Liturgical Press 2025), together with Sam Goyvaerts and Tom McLean, and The Cambridge Companion to Christian Liturgy (forthcoming). Joris is also a Past President of the international ecumenical Societas Liturgica and a member of the Malines Conversations Group.

Methods in liturgical theology, Christian worship and philosophy, the Eucharist in the Roman rite, the liturgical year, the veneration of the saints, liturgical spiritualities, sacramentality and sacraments in contemporary cultures
