Justin Appel, the Notre Dame Concordia, and Ritornello Ensemble present an afternoon concert of Latvian choral music by Ēriks Ešenvalds and Pēteris Vasks. Vasks’ Plainscapes depicts a lengthy sunrise over the Latvian plains, setting up an atmospheric scene for Ešenvalds’ unique take on the passion genre. Passion and Resurrection tells the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection from the perspective of Mary Magdalene, using an eclectic blend of the gospels, medieval Latin hymns, and Byzantine liturgical texts.
