Fy23 Recital Msm 1 C Ortega Dean Peck 2023 03 26 Poster

First-year MSM conducting students Jeffrey Dean, Cristian Ortega, and Owen Peck will present a joint recital on Sunday, March 26th at 2:30 p.m. in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center - Reyes Organ & Choral Hall. The program is comprised entirely of sacred choral music. Both a cappella works as well as works featuring the [Marjorie] O’Malley Organ, a two-manual instrument built by Paul Fritts & Co. in 2004 for the Reyes Organ & Choral Hall, will be performed by singers from the Concordia Vocal Ensemble.

Jeffrey Dean will present a set titled “Sanctity in Song,” curated around themes of holiness. The traditional Sanctus text is presented in both German and Latin - one setting in a Romantic style and the other in a Minimalist style. The concept of holiness is further examined, in English, through a Negro spiritual which reflects on turning away from sin and sorrow. The concept of holiness is also examined through the lens of time, showcased in the Hebrew texts from the Sabbath Evening service. Music by Robert Nathaniel Dett, Ethan McGrath, Felix Mendelssohn, and Theodore Morrison.

Owen Peck will present pieces from the Renaissance, 20th, and 21st Centuries centering around the theme of “celestial song.” The program, chosen to highlight the extraordinary acoustics of Reyes Hall, explores the power of collective song when we join our voices in praise, drawing from the Orthodox, Catholic, and Anglican traditions. Featuring works by Pavel Chesnokov, Cipriano de Rore, and Cecilia McDowall.

Cristian Ortega will present a selection of four different movements as central to death and that composers have embodied throughout history in the famous masses of the dead or Requiem. We will see the stamp that each one imprinted through writing and style. Both a cappella works as well as works featuring the [Marjorie] O’Malley Organ, a two-manual instrument built by Paul Fritts & Co. in 2004 for the Reyes Organ & Choral Hall, will be performed by singers from the Concordia Vocal Ensemble.

This performance will be live-streamed.
