Music, Courage and Remembrance

Music, Courage and Remembrance is an inter-artistic event of dance, art and singing celebrating the music of Pulitzer Prize winner Shulamit Ran, former Resident Composer of the Chicago Symphony and the Lyric Opera. Directed by SMND's Professor of Conducting Carmen-Helena Téllez, the project is part of Professor Téllez's research in interdisciplinary arts and sacred music drama, and explores the topic of "The Jewish Artist in the Western World"  initiated by Mendelssohn's Elijah and the lecture by Professor Jeffery Sposato in the Spring. Dancer and choreographer Ayako Kato, (praised as "best of dance" by the Chicago Tribune)  joins forces with installation artist Gwendolyn Terry and soundscape designer and composer Christopher Preissing to develop an immersive experience around  Shulamit Ran's haunting music informed by her Jewish faith.
