Valentine's Day with Brahms and Gershwin

-

Location: Leighton Concert Hall - DeBartolo Performing Arts Center

Guest Artists from the Brooklyn Art Song Society Kristina Bachrach (soprano) and Michael Brofman (piano) join faculty artist Stephen Lancaster (baritone) to present a delightful Valentine's Day concert of romantic songs and piano solos by Johannes Brahms, and duets by George Gershwin.

Lifelong bachelor Johannes Brahms pined for the widowed Clara Schumann, but she remained loyal to her deceased husband Robert, and Johannes did not dare betray his once friend and mentor even from beyond the grave. The poignant tale of unrequited love and bittersweet loss provides the context for this concert of Brahms' selected songs and 6 Klavierstücke Op. 118.

Stephen Lancaster is excited to collaborate once again with the Brooklyn Art Song Society, this time bringing BASS artists to Notre Dame. Hailed by the New York Times as “ambitious” and “a company well worth watching,” the Brooklyn Art Song Society (BASS) entered its fourth season of first-rate music making in the fall of 2013. Dedicated to the vast repertoire of poetry set to music, BASS presents programs of epic scope yet intimate at the same time.
