Professor of Conducting Carmen-Helena Téllez was invited to present a lecture at the American Choral Directors Associations biennial symposium on repertoire, last June 12, in Austin, Texas. The symposium was dedicated to the analysis and impact of Latin American musical styles in world choral tradition and was attended by conductors from the whole continent, including representatives from Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, and several universities of the United States. Dr. Téllez discussed her work as Director of the Indiana University Latin American Music Center (1992-2012) and the Missa Brevis and the Stabat Mater by Mexican composer Mario Lavista, compositions she premiered and recorded before joining Notre Dame. Soon after her return, on June 18 and 19, Dr. Tellez hosted at Notre Dame a colloquium of scholars, composers and producers to discuss the future of creative exchanges between musicians of the United States and Latin America. This colloquium was supported by the Global Midwest program of the Mellon Foundation, with administration by the University of Illinois and support of the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts at Notre Dame.
