Sacred Music Choral Scholars
The Sacred Music Choral Scholars is an auditioned ensemble of 8 undergraduate Notre Dame singers who perform with Graduate Sacred Music and Conducting students in the Notre Dame Repertory Choir during its two weekly sessions in the Fall and Spring semesters, and in its annual Spring recital, including the dress rehearsal for this recital.
As members of the Repertory Choir the Choral Scholars work under the leadership of Professor Carmen-Helena Tellez, Head of the Conducting Studio at the University of Notre Dame. The Mentor and Coordinator for the Choral Scholars is doctoral student Justin Appel, who will coach the Choral Scholars in professional choral practices and repertoire preparation.
The Choral Scholars will be re-auditioned before the beginning of each academic year.
An audition call will be distributed through regular email channels.
Registration and Scholarship
For procedural reasons, the Choral Scholars must register in Sacred Music Program Repertory Choir for 0 credits at the beginning of each semester. If there are questions, please write to Janet Rudasics at email@example.com. Please add the subject line: CHORAL SCHOLARS REGISTRATION.
The Choral Scholars receive a scholarship in the manner of a stipend for this class. You will be informed of the details of disbursement of this scholarship.
Performances for the Spring 2016
The required performance for the Spring of 2016 is a program devoted to the Holy Year of Mercy.
- Weekly rehearsals: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30-1:45, Crowley 115
- Concert: FEBRUARY 28, Repertory Chorus conducted by Marie Smith and Phillip Ganir,
1st year MSM, Basilica of the Sacred Heart
- Dress Rehearsal: Saturday 27, 10:00am-1:00pm, Basilica of the Sacred Heart
The Choral Scholars are expected to follow the same professional practices of the Graduate Students participating in this recital, namely, they must arrive 5 minutes before the start of the rehearsal, and bring a pencil and all distributed scores. They may be required to practice segments of the music at home. IMPORTANT: Choral Scholars must also request access to the SMND Performance Calendar to receive schedule updates from the official Google Calendar of Sacred Music at Notre Dame, in order to remain updated about rehearsal and performance times. Sometimes rehearsals need to be changed to meet the demands of the venues. For access please write to Janet Rudasics at firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject ACCESS TO THE SMND PERFORMANCE CALENDAR FOR CHORAL SCHOLARS . Mr. Appel will also keep a website with information specifically directed to the Choral Scholars.
Like the Graduate Students in the Sacred Music Program, the Choral Scholars may be invited by other student conductors to participate in other recitals and to audition for specific solos if their voices match the specific requirements of the work. Participation in activities outside the regular Tuesday/Thursday schedule and beyond the assigned Repertory Choir recital is optional, and will be paid at the current hourly rate.
